In brief.
Be A Designer is a design studio based in Gallarate (Varese) which has been supporting emerging designers and brands in the creation and production of their collections for the past 12 years. For denim, it works with the brand to develop fit, fabric, washes and trims (buttons, rivets, patches and labels), selects the workshop and laundry best suited to the project, and oversees sample production and mass production. Denim requires specialised tailoring and washes: for this reason, costs and minimum order quantities are set out in the quotation once the style, fabric and wash have been chosen.

Choosing a pair of jeans comes down to three decisions.
With denim, the garment is all about the fabric, the fit and the wash. Get one of these wrong and you have to redo the sample: that’s why these decisions are made in advance, in consultation with the design department.
Fabric
The weight, composition, stretch and colour of the denim are chosen based on the brand’s positioning and the intended use of the garment.
Fit
The fit is the reason why a customer buys a pair of jeans again: it is developed from the pattern and tested on a sample.
Washing and finishing
Washes, treatments, buttons, rivets, patches and labels: the details that make your denim instantly recognisable.
A denim range or a garment for the collection.
Some brands are built around denim, whilst others are looking for a pair of jeans or a jacket to complete their collection. In this first call, we’ll work out where to start.
Denim range
A better fit, more washes and a clear positioning: a project to be developed through strategy, sample collection and the choice of laundry service.
An item for the collection
A pair of jeans, a jacket or a denim shirt to complete your men’s or women’s collection, in the brand’s signature style.
In both cases, we start with the fabric and fit: if you don’t have a design yet, the design department will develop one with you.
Workshop and laundry service, specially selected for your jeans.
Our denim is manufactured and washed in specialist workshops and laundries, selected on a project-by-project basis depending on the garment, the wash and the quantities involved. We always tell you where it is produced and we do not label anything as ‘Made in Italy’ if it isn’t.
Be A Designer doesn’t just handle production. We only undertake pure contract manufacturing for VAT-registered individuals and established companies. Those starting from scratch go through the full programme: it’s the safest way to avoid spending money on production before knowing what to sell, to whom and at what price.
Fabric garments are manufactured near Gallarate; for denim, we select a workshop and laundry that are suitable for the project.

How much does a range of jeans cost?
With denim, the cost depends on the fabric, fit, wash, trims and quantity, and varies considerably from one workshop to another. For this reason, it is specified in the quotation once the design has been finalised.
| Item | Approximate cost | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Design and pattern-making | subject to a quotation | Style, fit and range of sizes |
| Sample | subject to a quotation | Fabric and care instructions |
| Production | subject to a quotation | Style, fabric, wash and quantity |
| Buttons, rivets and patches | subject to a quotation | Materials, finishes and quantities |
| Brand labels | €0.15–0.20 each | Manufactured on an industrial scale, in a batch of around 1,000 items |
During the first call, we’ll give you a rough estimate for your project and explain what factors affect the minimum requirements and timelines.
Frequently asked questions.
Be A Designer supports brands in the development of jeans and denim garments: fabric, fit, washes and trims, selection of the workshop and laundry, samples and production.
No. Jeans and denim garments are manufactured and washed in specialist workshops and laundries, selected on a project-by-project basis depending on the garment and the quantities involved. Be A Designer oversees the development process and manages relations with the manufacturers.
It depends on the fabric, fit, wash, trims and quantity: a pair of raw jeans and a pair that have been washed and treated cost very different amounts. This is why the price is specified in the quotation; the brand labels cost €0.15–0.20 each for a batch of around 1,000 items.
Minimum quantities depend on the model, fabric, wash and workshop, and are specified in the quotation. During our first call, we’ll give you a rough estimate for your project.
Yes. The wash is agreed with the design department and tested on the sample, along with the buttons, rivets, patches and labels: these are the details that make a pair of jeans instantly recognisable.
It depends on the workshop and laundry service you choose. Be A Designer always states where its products are made and does not label items as ‘Made in Italy’ if they are not.
